ChickTech Tech Faire on Dec. 9th Celebrates Computer Science Education Week
Press Release – December 5, 2018, Austin, Texas
ChickTech Austin is pleased to invite the press and public to attend the ChickTech: High School Tech Faire on December 9th at the Texas State School for the Deaf at 4:15 pm. The Tech Faire will showcase projects developed by area high school girls participating in kickoff weekend of the ChickTech: High School program, which takes place Dec 8th and 9th during Computer Science Education Week, an annual program dedicated to inspiring K-12 students to take interest in computer science.
71% of U.S. jobs require digital skills and high-skilled computing occupations are the
fastest-growing and best-paying in the United States. ChickTech: High School is a national, annual, year-long program that provides 100 high school girls in participating cities with hands-on technology activities, mentoring opportunities, and exposure to technology careers.
The girls attending the program in Austin are teacher-nominated from over 40 area schools, with a special focus placed on recruiting students with limited participation in other technology programs, who teachers feel would directly benefit from more exposure to technology, and who attend Title I schools. After the kickoff weekend, the program will continue with a series of workshops hosted by Microsoft and other local organizations to build technology knowledge and confidence along with individual mentoring with local role models. Our program is unique because it is offered at no cost to the participants, providing all workshop materials, food, transportation, sign language interpreters, and childcare as needed.
The Tech Faire will showcase projects created by the girls attending kick-off weekend hands-on workshops that include:
- Building a Computer
- Digital Filmmaking
- Game World Design
- Smart Wearables
- Soft Circuits
- Technology of Sound
- Web Development
It is fitting that the Tech Faire occurs during Computer Science Education Week, which is held in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906).
